Barefoot or Minimalist Running
A healthy lifestyle is a lot more than your “diet” …. sure……… nutrition takes a big slice of what is needed to function well when you are looking at the whole chart of healthy lifestyle choices, but movement and connecting with the earth is also a section you need to carve a slice out of, from the whole pie chart of lifestyle choices.
In the video below Sonya and I are on a training run/ride on our Xtracycle which takes place on a rough stony track and I explain why BAREFOOT or MINIMALIST running can be used to describe the same concept.
Barefoot or minimalist running, when you start talking about natural running or barefoot running there is quite often a misunderstanding in regards as to if you’ve got a running shoe on then you are not barefoot running.
In which there is an element of truth …….. as your not barefoot in the true sense of the word, yet this is the difference between understanding going barefoot as a walking activity or grounding activity like a walk in the grass or sand etc.
Barefoot or minimalist running is a different beast to a casual shoe off activity to get your toes some fresh air.
Do you remember the last time you walked barefoot on the beach, through the grass or in the bush and simply reconnected with the Earth
There has been much extensive research to show that connecting to the Earth’s natural energy, by walking barefoot on grass, sand, dirt or rock can diminish chronic pain, fatigue and other ailments ………. this connection is referred to as Earthing or Grounding.
When your bare feet or skin comes in contact with the earth, the concept or theory is that free electrons are taken up into the body. These electrons help neutralize damaging excess free radicals that can lead to inflammation and disease in the body.
The Earth is a conductor of free electrons and so are all living things on the planet, including us. The body is composed of mostly of water and minerals which in combination are excellent conductors of electrons from the Earth providing there is direct skin contact or some other conductive channel for them to flow through.
The Earth’s energy enhances a person’s physiology to allow the body to cope and repair helping to promote well being, vitality and better sleep.
It’s also thought to harmonize and stabilize the body’s basic biological rhythms, knocks down (and even knocks out) chronic inflammation and reduces and eliminates associated pain, making it the most natural and powerful anti-inflammatory and anti-ageing remedy around.
The elite cycling teams of the Tour de France use earthing technology for recovery so there must be something in the theory as these are elite level athletes at the top of their game and in a sport with a huge amount of money attached to it.
No matter what your age, gender, race or health status you will benefit from a daily dose of Earthing
You can still embrace the concepts of barefoot running with a minimalist shoe, the concepts of barefoot running are still being used … that would most commonly be as a non-heel striking motion and more of a forefoot landing than what a heavily cushioned shoe would disguise due to bad form.
Minimalist running shoes have a place in the barefoot running idea simply for practicality and efficiency. As long as you take time to train with barefoot techniques and the footwear you choose caters for a wide toe box and does not have heel lift, then your choice of padding can come down to a personal preference.
We don’t do anything out of a dogma or stick with something if there is an obviously better way to do it or if it doesn’t quite fit in with an overall concept we support.
Unfortunately, you will get plenty of die-hard barefoot practitioners who will apply a dogmatic approach to a barefoot option, citing reasons that do nothing to further the sensible discussion around why we look at barefoot activities with a cultural disdain at times in our western culture.
Again it comes down to your conscious choices of what actions you are taking and are you fully thinking something through or are you engaging in an activity on a subconscious level because that’s the way you’ve always done it before.
Do you automatically put your shoes on to perhaps, just go on check the mailbox on the front garden ……. is it necessary.
As always we are here to encourage conscious thinking and questioning the narrative of mainstream ways to go through life that doesn’t serve your own self-sovereignty or preferred lifestyle choices .
